Hi guys. I really need your help and am going nuttier than I already am, which is not a good thing. lol My Acer Aspire One isn't working. Yesterday, my speech stopped. I finally coaxed it back (first time ever) but it was really sluggish. So then, I closed alot of windows that I had open but it still wasn't working right, not saving Wordpad documents etc. So I held down the power button until it shut off and then rebooted. Once I did, the speech wouldn't return. I have it set to make noise when programs open and close and I only heard a few open on start-up. I tried rebooting at least three more times with the same result. So yesterday, I had MOm, who knows the real absolute basics about computers try to help me. She said the mouse (the trackpad) wasn't working right. She noticed about three or four icons for Acer E-Recovery popped up and none of them worked when she tried them. When we tried again today, she got to Acer Recovery Management and just stayed there. It seems to be locked in the desktop, so I can't even do a system restore like I wanted to. IShe also keeps seeing Knod Antivirus, which she says is blocking out everything else and there's no way to exit it. f not, then I'll have to find the cord to my external hard disk and use that cause I don't have one built into the netbook. To be fair, I have been shutting off alot with the power button cause I kept losing speech etc. So I do realise that might have something to do with it. I also have a program called JFW Notepad so am wondering if that had anything to do with it. If you can help me, please either post here or contact me at the following: (put spaces and wrote out dot com to avoid spammers so need to change when pasting)

hmm can you boot into safe mode and check your security settings on nod 32.. the fire wall could be blocking programs that never "got permission" from running. Also there should be a way to recover from the recovery partition with out booting into windows. I don't remember how to do this as i had to do it to an acer machine a little while ago, but the way i found out how was by calling acer, when you have some sighted help again have them read the tech support number and the serial number thats on the sticker that should be on your netbook and give acer a call.

No, we didn't try anything like that. I can give it a shot. I'm developing alot more faith in Mom on the computer but that sounds like it would be a bit too complicated for her... I'll definitely look into the recovery stuff though, as this seems to be something simple enough to try as a start. Knod never did this before and I've been using it for about a month now. Needless to say, I won't be installing it again.

Wait,w aht version of nod are you using? When you set up the firewall, did you set it to something besides the auto or learn mode or what ever its called? And on most computers, the recoevery thingy is a partition, if that gets erased, or you delete it, you always have the restore discs handy. What kind of computer do you have? I may be able to help you out. Also, what OS do you ahve?

Not sure which version it is. All I know is I got it and installed it. I didn't configure it in any way and I've had it for at least a month with no problems. lol I've got 13 machines. this one's an Acer Aspire One (the 9.9 inch blue one if it makes any difference) running XP. It's a netbook and therefor has no cd rom drive, which is why I think it didn't come with cds. I know there's a way to start Acer e-Recovery Management with a keystroke but I'm not even sure if that would help since Mom was able to click on the Acer E-Recovery icon and it sent her to management and did nothing else. I definitely didn't delete anything in that partition nor did I touch it, so if anything happened there, it wasn't on my end. Maybe, like I said, from the rebooting or JFW Notepad or something screwed up JFW or the registry got messed up somehow, as was suggested to me.

I'm a senior citizen myself. When I lose speech, I about die. I have a sighted friend who comes over when this happens which is not often thank God. He immediately puts the computer in safe mode and reads the screen out until he can get jaws back. Also is your anti-virus program or a fire wall blocking your speech? Just some thoughts. Hope you can get things working again. My heart goes out to you.

Well, as I said, I never had that problem with the antivirus and didn't touch any firewall settings. But since everyone keeps bringing them up, I'll have to figure out how to start in safe mode so we can check those settings if I can't find out how to start recovery without booting into Windows.

Okay, I just looked it up and found the hotkey combination. I have to hit alt f10 as the computer is starting. Now that I have the cord to my cd rom drive, I'm gonna save the factory defaults and also make a backup of my system once I set it up exactly as I like. Hopefully, this will all fix the problem. I'm curious as to whether it'll reformat my whole system or just reset the programs? I guess I'll find out when we do it.

Deeeeep shit. We started ERecovery Management and it was working fine. We told it to restore to factory defaults and then it said there was a problem with Windows and it needed to shut down to prevent any damage to the system. It advised starting in safe mode and then checking my programs to make sure things were installed properly etc. So if this really is the Knod, what do I need to check? How do I go into safe mode? Remember that I can't get out of the desktop when I start up the computer normally... Does anyone know if I can download the ERecovery Management software and put it on a disk or something? If so, will it still give me the same problem or no, cause it's a fresh copy? If worse comes to worst, I have a genuine copy of Windows XP Home that I got from Ebay. If I install it will I need to get the sound drivers etc for my Acer Aspire One or can I install JFW etc and use it normally?

hit f eight as you start up, taht will take you into safe mode, then uninstall nod, then boot into windows, then see what happens.

So once I'm in safe mode, it should give me a list of things to uninstall? Sorry, but I've never done this before and don't want to confuse Mom.

The recovery application will *probably* format the hole thing.
It doesn't sound like you booted into the recovery partition in post 9; booting would be the way to go. If you use your xp home disk, you'll almost surtainly have to download drivers for everything; ontop of this, theres a slight chance that it won't see your harddrive when it asks you which partition you want to install to. As a side note, if this is xp home retail that we're talking about here, you can't use the same key on more than 1 computer.
Safe mode is like a semmy stripped version of windows, you'll have to go into control pannel then add & remove or which ever way you use to remove software; this should be normal enough not to result in much confusion.

yeah it doesn't sound like you booted into the recovery partition as i believe f10 is the boot men u and not the recovery partition. i would advise you call acer and get them to send you the recovery disc and use that before using a retail copy of windows xp as that would mean you wiould have to download all the drivers indvidually. Yeah safe mode looks just like windows normally do except there wont be no sound and the screen resolution will be considerably lower and only those things absolutely need for windows to run will be loaded. you uninstall an app in safe mode the same way you would normally do it in windows. try holding down f11 or check your documentation or as i said above call acer and ask them whats the hot key for the boot partition. acers usually come with a one year warranty and thus their tech support should be able to help you free of charge till thats up.
